Back when I worked in politics, my coworkers and I would joke that you can’t run for governor in Minnesota without your ad featuring one or more of the following shots:
1. Candidate in plaid flannel shirt in field of corn
2. Pickup truck driving down gravel road
3. Scandinavian farmers
I thought of those conversations when the above spot aired during the Superbowl last night. Less than 1% of Americans claim farming as an occupation, and yet the idea of the small family farm still resonates as a cultural signifier of what it means to be an American (and also a certain kind of old-school masculinity).
